In this interview, we talk with Jochen, an experienced Dynamics 365 consultant, about his experiences and insights. He shares his career path, the challenges and rewards of his current role as a Solution Architect at Cegeka, and offers valuable tips for those uncertain about their career choices.
Can you walk us through your career path?
Jochen: "I started in Antwerp at an ERP implementer, where I spent the first few years working on projects in the construction sector and laboratories. Later, I moved to Boss Paints to oversee an ERP implementation, where I got to know Edan. After projects with AX2009 and the start of D365, I joined Ardo for a D365 implementation. Eventually, I became a Solution Architect at Cegeka, working on various implementations."
What made you decide to transition to a lead/expert role?
Jochen: "I always wanted to have a broad overview and not be tied to one domain. At Cegeka, I could utilize that versatility as a Solution Architect, especially with my knowledge of MSFT AX and D365. When Stefan from Cegeka asked me for this role, I didn't hesitate for a moment."
What are the biggest challenges in this role and how do you handle them?
Jochen: "The biggest challenge is ensuring a project works well on all fronts and meets customer requirements. In presales, I have to convince prospects with demos, which is always a challenge. It's also difficult to steer clients and consultants towards standard solutions without quickly resorting to customizations."
What do you enjoy most about your current position?
Jochen: "The variety and diversity. I work on different projects, keep up with D365 developments, and am involved in all phases and domains of a project. I also love the sense of impact, sharing knowledge with colleagues, and coaching new employees."
What does your typical workday look like nowadays?
Jochen: "My days are filled with stand-up meetings, discussions with project managers and developers, client meetings, design and budget work, and presales demos. The agenda is always full but constantly changing, which I enjoy."
Do you have any tips for people unsure about their career choice?
Jochen: "Working on the client side and in consultancy are very different. On the client side, you are more broadly involved and think on multiple levels. As a consultant, you often work on multiple projects simultaneously. If you enjoy variety, consultancy is definitely for you."
