What drew you to a career as a Data Architect?
"Originally, I trained as a Business Engineer, but I wanted to dive deeper into technology. During my studies, I often heard the slogan 'Data Science is the sexiest job of the century', and it quickly made sense to me. However, once I started working, I realized that many companies lacked the proper architecture and data maturity to fully leverage their data, let alone build AI models.

I swiftly retrained as a Data Engineer. Through my varied approaches to problem-solving, I realized that issues need a more structured approach. I became increasingly fascinated with creating platforms and ecosystems that help companies future-proof their data. Although I started with a technical focus, I soon understood that these platforms are valuable not just for tech specialists but for all stakeholders within an organization.

What appeals to me the most is the combination of deep technical challenges and the ability to oversee a wide array of concepts."
 
What does a typical day at work look like for you as a Data Architect?
"A typical workday can be quite dynamic, as it varies depending on the project phase, team dynamics, and additional organizational tasks. However, if I were to describe something typical, it would involve actively seeking best practices, both independently and collaboratively. Being a Data Architect isn't about having all the answers; it's about teamwork. This means I frequently engage in discussions with team members or clients to grasp their needs and challenges.

My main tools include communication platforms like Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and Azure DevOps. Depending on the project's scope and team structure, I might also spend a day deeply immersed in code, analyzing complex cases together. I find it beneficial to do this early in a project to establish consistent guidelines and ensure a cohesive approach—like charting a course.

As a Data Professional, tasks often focus on solving specific challenges efficiently. As a Data Architect, my role shifts to understanding how each task fits into the broader context and why certain decisions are made to ensure logical connections between them.

I often compare this process to building a platform versus constructing a house. Building data pipelines involves extracting, transforming, and storing data efficiently. Data Engineers typically handle individual components, requiring specific expertise to ensure seamless operation. As an Architect, I focus on planning and ensuring all elements integrate smoothly."

What do you find most challenging about your job?

"I thrive on juggling multiple tasks simultaneously; it keeps me on my toes. Continuously shifting contexts, adapting established best practices to fit specific situations, and navigating diverse personalities. I relish the challenge of managing everything."

 

What skills and knowledge do you believe are essential for a successful Data Architect?

"Analytical thinking, communication, empathy, and a broad understanding of the data landscape. You need to be able to empathize with everyone's needs and leverage their expertise to establish effective workflows. Bringing these insights together forms the foundation for a successful project."

 

What advice do you have for future Databricks Champions?
"Databricks Champions are seasoned Data Professionals with hands-on experience in Databricks. They serve as an extension of Databricks Solution Architects. What's most important in this role is having an open mindset and actively engaging with the community. As I mentioned earlier, data is a team effort. To achieve great results, don't hesitate to share your experiences and insights. As a Databricks Champion, you're setting an example, so lead by it. If you're not actively involved in sharing knowledge, don't expect others to share theirs with you. The data world (and Databricks) evolves quickly, so it's impossible to stay on top of everything alone. It's okay not to have all the answers; it doesn't make you any less of a Champion."
