Ritchie Wynants, Support Engineer Open Systems
Ritchie Wynants, Open Systems Engineer at Cegeka, shares in this interview his passion for automation and the freedom to shape his own career in the dynamic world of IT.
Developing automation allows both ourselves and the customer to request innovations in their environment without long lead times. In this way, smaller repetitive tasks are taken out of the hands of colleagues, allowing them to focus on more important matters.
Ritchie Wynants, Support Engineer Open Systems
Why do you like doing your job?
"I am someone who likes to be presented with new challenges. I also notice this outside of work hours. I am always trying to teach myself new things by immersing myself in a diverse collection of hobbies. My interests range from nature and biology, to literature, music and sports. I derive satisfaction from innovation. This also reflects in my position at work. I am at my best when I am regularly given new tasks. That way I stay up-to-date with the developments within the team and gather a broad knowledge of the technologies we are currently using.
I also enjoy helping people move forward. We all know the feeling when we want to put something together, but lose track of it for a moment. At those moments, my colleagues know they can always come to me for advice so that together we can bring the puzzle (in many cases a block of code) to a successful conclusion."
What impact can you create?
"Because we try to maintain a close cooperation with the users and developers at the customers, I can contribute from my role to the satisfaction of Cegeka's customers. Developing automation allows both ourselves and the customer to request renewals in their environment without long lead times. In this way, smaller repetitive tasks are taken out of the hands of colleagues, allowing them to focus on more important matters."
What tools do you come into contact with?
"As an engineer on the Open Systems team, I come into contact with a diverse list of tools and technologies. In fact, we support various operating systems such as RedHat, Oracle Linux and Ubuntu. We also try to focus as much as possible on automation. We do this primarily through the use of Ansible and Jenkins. The code we develop for this is collected in a central Git, so we can easily create automation together with colleagues."
Why do you enjoy working at Cegeka?
"Cegeka gives their employees the opportunity to be the 'CEO of your career.' By this they mean that you can discover new functions and roles as your interests within the profession change. There are many opportunities to blaze new trails, both in engineering and beyond.
As a Cegeka employee, you also get the opportunity to work very flexibly. This involves both where you work and when you work. For example, I like to work from home, and this is no problem at all. Within the team we make joint agreements about which days we meet at the office. You can also use sliding hours, which means that you can adjust your working hours to your biological rhythm. Are you an early bird or do you prefer to work later in the evening? This is something you can fully schedule yourself."
What do you still want to achieve in this role?
"I am currently working on developing into the role of systems engineer. I now have several years of experience within Cegeka, and since then I have thoroughly honed my technical knowledge. I am therefore completely ready to take on a more crucial role within our team. After all, as a system engineer you are also partly responsible for supporting new colleagues, so that they too become familiar with the working methods within Cegeka and the Open Systems team."
Why should people choose this role?
"The role I fill offers a very varied range of tasks. You work both on solving known problems and developing new projects. With this comes the ability to work independently and be given responsibilities. We manage a very large environment, which again offers you many learning opportunities."
How could you continue to grow within Cegeka?
"In a distant future I might want to move into the role of project manager, but this is just speculation for now. However, this would be possible within Cegeka taking into account my personal development and vacancies at that time.
At the moment, I feel at home in an engineering function, but I am aware that the technologies within the IT world never stand still and you will therefore have to keep training yourself. Therefore, I am very satisfied that I would be able to retrain within Cegeka in case I would no longer be able to keep up with the high-speed train of technologies."
