Can you briefly introduce yourself?
"I am Kevin Boutsen, Lead Architect in Quality Engineering. From the very start of my career, I have been fascinated by how technology and efficiency go hand in hand. In my role, I focus on establishing robust test architectures, optimizing test automation within CI/CD pipelines, and advising organizations on best practices. What drives me most is translating complex technical challenges into workable and scalable solutions."
Can you walk us through your career path?
"My career started in software testing and quickly evolved toward test automation and DevOps integration. Over the years, I have taken on various roles, from Test Automation Engineer to DevOps Consultant, continuously exploring new methodologies and technologies. What has helped me along the way is my eagerness to learn, the freedom to experiment, and the support of inspiring mentors and colleagues. Additionally, my experience as a consultant has exposed me to diverse business environments, allowing me to develop a broad perspective on Quality Engineering."
You have more than 14 years of experience in test automation. How did you develop your skills?
"I developed my skills by continuously exploring new technologies, gaining hands-on experience, and tackling complex projects. I have worked with various tools such as Playwright, Selenium, Ranorex, and Postman and have integrated test automation within DevOps pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab, and Azure DevOps. Additionally, I have conducted assessments to improve test strategies and helped companies implement more efficient test automation solutions. Learning never stops, and by actively sharing my expertise, I continue to grow as well."
What do you find most appealing about your role?
"The combination of strategic and technical challenges. I have the opportunity to make architectural decisions while also working hands-on on innovative testing solutions. Additionally, I am highly motivated by guiding teams and helping companies enhance their testing maturity. The fact that I can make a real impact on how software quality is approached gives me great satisfaction."
In addition to your advisory role, you are also a technical trainer. What motivates you to share your knowledge?
"For me, sharing knowledge is a way to not only help others grow but also to keep myself sharp. Test automation and DevOps are rapidly evolving fields, and through training and coaching, I stay up to date myself. I also gain energy from guiding teams and individuals, especially when I see them applying new insights directly in their work. My experience in both the technical and strategic aspects of testing helps me explain complex concepts in an accessible way."
What would you say to someone considering a career in test automation?
"Test automation is a fantastic field that combines technology, analytical thinking, and process optimization. My advice would be to build a strong foundation in software testing and then gradually explore tools and programming languages. Don’t just focus on the tools—understand the underlying purpose of test automation: delivering faster and more reliable software. Stay curious, experiment with different technologies, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes—that’s where the most valuable learning happens."
